Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
There are many advantages of the HWD1000. One is the power requirements are 115 Voltage 60Hz so it can work off the regular power socket. Another is the unit does not require external venting for the dryer. Hot vapors during the dry cycle are condensed into water and drained away. Also, the compact unit dimensions allow it to be built into a kitchen cabinet. This Haier Washer/Dryer combo also features: electronic control and LED display, ultra quiet operation, 6 fabric care wash cycles, auto select wash/rinse temp, spin cycle on/off option, dual dryer temperature settings, dispensers for detergent/ fabric softener/ bleach, and condensed drying.

5 out of 5 stars great washer/dryer   March 14, 2009

I love this washer/dryer. Its easy to use cleans great and is compact. I have an apartment that only had a washer hook-up and it perfect for my space. Each cycle takes about about 2 and 1/2 hours but thats no problem for me. It cleans a whole lot better than my old top load washer and alot quieter. The capcity for loads is much smaller than my old top load, of course, so I wash more loads. That is no problem, as well, because this is a better cleaning machine hands down anyway. I highly recommend this washer/dryer.

5 out of 5 stars Great value, time saver, energy saver, water saver, wash very well   October 25, 2008

I bought this machine from another vendor and really love it! It's compact size with up to 11 lb capacity (which is just right). I hate those bulky, super size washer and dryers, and this one is really a space saver. The control panel is easy to read and easy to figure out how to program, the installation doesn't need any professional help and the washing job is super too! The first time, I throuth in some of my son's dirty clothes coats and very glad to see it was cleaned very well. And the best part is that I can choose if I like to dry the laundry or not with just a button to press. Usually I don't use the drying part (I'm an enviromentalist), but if I'm in a hurry and need the clothes soon, I just press the dry button and leave, there is no need to take the laundry out from washer and put it into a dryer!
I bought it from www.haier.com . There are a few vendors to choose. I choose Rainbow Appliance and was very satisfied about their service. The price is only $609. I added a 4 year warrenty, plus the 1 year manufacture warrenty, I will have someone to count on for 5 years.
The only cons so far is that the instruction is a little confusing because some of the steps already done in the factory and the terms are not very clear. It took me 30 mintutes to figure it out.

2 out of 5 stars good while it lasts   December 27, 2009

Picked up this machine last winter because I needed a ventless dryer for my small laundry room - and loved the idea of having a machine that combined washing and drying functions. Being just my husband and I, we don't go through a ton of laundry in a week - two or three loads in this little washer was a standard week for us.

About six months in, the dryer stopped working. Oh, it still ran...and ran...and ran...but just didn't dry the clothes. They actually seemed more wet, if that's possible. I figured out that it was a broken heating element, and after hearing about negative experiences with customer service, opted not to have it repaired (though it was still under warranty), and use it just as a washer and air dry clothes.

Now, I'm wondering whether it's even getting my clothes clean. We have a yellow labrador retriever and lots of dark clothes, and it seems like every load of laundry has more dog hair on it once it comes out than when it goes in...

And the "lint trap" - ugh, I don't even know what to say about that. Each time I open it, I must be prepared with several towels and a bucket, because it holds no lint, just a bunch of water...which has probably voided my warranty, anyway.

For now, I continue to use it as a washer because it fits the space well, and it's 120V. Otherwise...ugh. Well, it's energy efficient, so that's something I suppose. :(

1 out of 5 stars NO Customer Service   January 29, 2009

DO NOT DEPEND ON CUSTOMER SERVICE. Within the one year warranty the pump quit. For several weeks I attempted to get a customer service person, and when I finally did it was useless. Because they had no repair people in my region, they decided they would would replace my washer, and they would pay shipping costs. Nice offer, but they never followed through. And I again was in telephone hell. I will NEVER buy another Haier product again.

1 out of 5 stars dependable appliance   July 23, 2009

Not at all dependable. I bought a Haier for a small kitchen in my daughter's new little house. It leaked from day 1 or did not work at all somedays. It flooded her new carpets and new floors 8-9 times. We just unplugged it. After Dependable Appliance put me off and made excuses for one month and did nothing...they said they could not refund me...for me to call Haier. Guess What? Haier is doing nothing either. My daughter has a metal piece of junk in her kitchen and has to go back and forth to my house to do her laundry. Terrible customer service! I guess the courts will be next.

Mechanical washing machines appeared in the early 1800s, although they were all hand-powered. Early models cleaned clothes by rubbing them, while later models cleaned clothes by moving them through water. Steam-powered commercial washers appeared in the 1850s, but home washing machines remained entirely hand-powered until the early 1900s, when several companies started making electric machines. The Automatic Electric Washer Company and Hurley Machine Corporation both began selling electric washers in 1907, while Maytag offered an electric wringer washer in 1911. In 1947, Bendix offered the first fully automatic washing machine, and by 1953 spin-dry machines overtook the wringer types in popularity.

The last wringer washer manufactured in the United States was made in June of 1990 at Speed Queen's plant in Ripon, Wisconsin. The major U.S. manufacturers today are General Electric, Maytag (Montgomery Ward), Speed Queen (Amana and Montgomery Ward), Whirlpool (Kenmore), and White Consolidated (Frigidaire and Westinghouse).

Models designed for use in other countries offer different features. One component required on all models sold in England (and possibly soon in the rest of Europe) is called the lid lock. Normally when the lid is raised the washer must stop for safety reasons. However, in England, when the washer is operating the lid must be locked closed.

The Manufacturing Process The manufacturing process is split into fabrication (making parts), sub-assembly (putting parts together to make components), and assembly (putting the components together to form the final product). The fabrication process comprises several different procedures, each specific to a particular type of raw material—sheet metal, plastic, or aluminum. Once the constituent parts have been made, they are assembled; major sub-assemblies, or components, include the transmission, the pump, the spin and wash tubs, the balance ring, and the painted parts. Finally, the sub-assemblies are put together inside the shell of the washer, which is then complete.
